A LEVEL STUDENT STORY
LYNETTE
A Level Biology, Chemistry, and
Psychology student
travelling to College to finding my way around
my timetable, which made the transition much
easier.
“I first came to Bury College when I was in Year
10 for a taster day. I got to take part in a science
practical and try out a lesson, and I knew then
that I wanted to come here. The content of the
A Level courses really appealed to me, and I chose
Biology, Chemistry and Psychology because I
want to study Pharmacy at university. Chemistry
and Human Biology are usually the required
subjects, so they were the right choice for my
future career.
“One of my favourite things about studying
A Levels has been the practical work. On my
Chemistry course we do two or three practicals
each term, and one of my most memorable
days was carrying out a titration practical in
Chemistry before dissecting a heart in Biology
that afternoon. I’ve also had work experience
at Fishpool Pharmacy, where I was able to
observe pharmacists at work and gain first-hand
experience of the career I want to go into.
“A Levels are a big step up from high school.
The work is more in depth and you do more
independent learning, but I think that’s definitely
a plus. The way the tutors teach makes everything
digestible and helps you not just learn the
content, but actually understand it. We also have
Skills for Life sessions every week, where we talk
about how things are going and have one-to-one
meetings with our tutors. When I first started,
my tutor helped me get used to everything, from
“When I finish my A Levels, I’m hoping to study
Pharmacy at a university in Manchester. I want
to stay in Manchester because I think there are
some really good Pharmacy courses and good
work opportunities too. My advice to anyone
thinking about A Levels is to stay consistent, keep
revising and keep on top of your work, because
there’s a lot to learn.”
