A LEVELS
WHAT IS AN A LEVEL?
The A Level study programme will appeal
strongly to students who:
An A Level study programme typically involves the
in-depth study of three (or in some cases, four)
subjects over two years. Students will develop
advanced subject knowledge, and will mainly be
assessed through examination at the end of the
second year. (Some subjects include courseworkbased components).
• Have enjoyed academic teaching and learning
in school and are comfortable, and successful, with
examinations as the main form of assessment.
• Enjoy private study, researching topics, reading
around subjects and can work independently.
In addition to our traditional A Levels, we also offer
A Level equivalents in certain subjects. These include
Alternative Academic Qualifications (AAQs) and other
more applied subjects (see individual subject details on
our website for further information). Some of these
have a higher level of practical content and a different
assessment process. As part of your A Level study
programme, you may include one of these subjects to
support your progression and career aim.
• Want to study traditional subjects such as
Geography, History, Mathematics and English to a
higher level.
• Are interested in a career where, at present, A Levels
are the preferred entry route e.g. Medicine,
Veterinary Science, Law.
